FORMULAE FOR PRINTER RIBBON RE-INKING
=====================================
Being the owner of an AMSTRAD DMP-2000 printer, it soon
became apparent that I would need to spend a small fortune on new
Printer Ribbons unless I could discover a satisfactory way of
re-inking them. Upon reading of someones success with Stamp Pad
Ink I decided to give this a try.The result was a pathetic grey
print which was totally unacceptable. I decided that there must be
a better way and set about finding it. Months later after much
experimenting I believe that I have found the answer.
The only part you will require which you are unlikely to find
in the home is some Jet Black Printers Ink. This is the ink used
by the less modern printers, there is sure to be one nearby. If
your club or firm use the services of this type of printer then
this is the first place you should try. You will probably, like
me, get it free of charge.
Right now, down to the nitty, gritty.
You will need the following = AN EGG CUP, A WIDE NECK CONTAINER
(jam jar), A KIDDIES PAINT BRUSH, SOME WHITE SPIRIT, A TIN OF WD40
TYPE SPRAY (I use GT85), PLENTY OF NEWSPAPER (just in case), A
TEASPOON, some WASHING-UP LIQUID, and of course the PRINTERS INK.
Now follow me into the kitchen and we will begin (PLEASE NOTE
a degree in Chemistry is not necessary).
Take the EMPTY Jam Jar (unless you want red ink, that is) spray
the WD40 into it (cover it with some newspaper to keep down the
exccess spray) until you have about 3/4 of an egg cup full. With
the WD40 in the Jam Jar add 1/2 teaspoon of the ink and stir until
all the ink has dissolved. Add 4-5 teaspoons of white spirit and 2
drops of fairy liquid (OOPS!! got an advert in). Pour the mixture
into a small screw top bottle (Oh, I forgot to mention the bottle
earlier, now you're in a panic) and shake well.
Testing! Testing, Now we need to test the ink, with the aid
of the brush place a drop onto the newspaper. If the centre of the
blob looks nice and black, pat yourself on the back, you've done
it! (don't worry about the oil slick radiating outwards from the
blob, this will not happen when you are printing. If it is not
black enough (it should be) you can add a little more of the thick
ink, but don't over do it.
RE-INKING, now you can paint your ribbon with the aid of
the kiddies paint brush, and there you have it. If like me you are
the proud owner of an AMSTRAD DMP-2000 you will need to open the
right hand side of the ribbon container (with a Stanley Knife) to
locate the felt disc inside. Remove the felt disc (make a note of
how the ribbon and the two little rollers are situated, they are
bound to jump out) and place it into the eggcup and pour the
mixture over it. Leave it for about an Hour so that it permeates
right into the fibre. Reassemble and place it back into the
printer.
With this amount of ink you should be able to re-ink your
ribbons 20 to 50 times. I re-ink brand new ribbons so that I have
jet black print from day one.
Good printing,
Steve Ebbrell.
